Decked Out

Summer 2025

Helping a widow with some deck repairs and modifications

A team of volunteers had the privilege of serving a dear widow, Mrs. Elizabeth. What a joy it was to spend time with such a sweet, strong woman. As we worked alongside each other, she shared stories of her late husband, Robert (Bob), who passed away nine months ago after a courageous battle with cancer. While cancer is a tragic reminder of the brokenness in our world, we are reminded that God, in His goodness, can redeem even our deepest pain—giving us the opportunity to love and serve others, like Elizabeth, in their time of need.

Our day began by prepping her deck for staining. A previous team had already repaired some rotting boards and installed a new handrail, making it safer and easier for Elizabeth to come and go from her home. Once the deck was ready, we began staining. At the same time, another group started preparing her window sills, which were flaking badly, to ensure they’d be sealed and protected from the elements.

As we worked, we had meaningful conversations and enjoyed the fellowship of serving alongside one another. It’s always a blessing to see people come together, create new friendships, and strengthen community bonds.

Later, when Elizabeth invited us into her home to help repair a bathroom handrail, we were honored. She spoke so lovingly and proudly about all the things her husband built in their home—it was moving to listen to her stories and witness where many memories were made.

After we wrapped up our work and cleaned up, we gathered around Elizabeth and spent a tender time in prayer, lifting her needs to our Lord and Savior. It was a beautiful moment of unity and love.

Please continue to join us in prayer for Elizabeth—asking God for her continued physical strength, for freedom from fear as she walks through life without her beloved husband, and for courage to keep following the path the Lord has laid before her.

Elizabeth is truly a remarkable woman, and it was an honor to serve her.
