Last winter, a single mom reached out to Christians in Action because she had a frozen pipe. But when our team stepped inside her house, we realized the situation was much more urgent than a plumbing issue. The home had very little heat. She had been quietly enduring the freezing winter temperatures alone, without a fully functioning furnace.
We knew instantly that thawing a pipe wouldn’t matter if the house stayed freezing cold—it would just freeze right back up. As we looked closer, we uncovered a laundry list of other hidden issues. The plumbing drain lines under the house were completely broken, and previous water lines had been installed poorly.
At the same time, this mother was working hard on a separate, deeply personal goal: preparing her home and her life to bring her daughter back home. Facing these massive, expensive house repairs on top of that journey was a heavy burden to carry alone.
We immediately put out a big ask to our network to help us raise $5,000 to make HVAC repairs at the home. Our community blew past that goal. With the funding in place, our crew spent days reworking the utility system—getting her furnace repaired and running properly, fixing the plumbing lines correctly, clearing out the mess under the house, and heavily insulating the pipes so they would never freeze again.
Today, everything has changed. With a working HVAC system and safe plumbing, she is completely set. Best of all, after all her hard work and preparation, she has successfully welcomed her daughter back home to a warm, safe environment. Thank you to everyone who stepped up to support this mother, repair this home, and help reunite a family.
